Brisbane region arboricultural services

Likely you are at this site because you require diagnostic or planning services regarding existing trees. With more importance being placed on "green" assets councils are requesting that trees be catered for adequately on sites. Home owners too realise the benefits trees provide plus the time they take to grow, many large mature trees we enjoy were likely planted by some-one else or were remnant prior to us developing the site.

I'm Eric Frei, hold a Diploma of both Arboriculture and Horticulture plus other recognised certificates. I also own and run Australia's largest public access forum all about trees, free for all to use called Tree World where I post under my own name.

My business is focused on ethical and professional advice, based on industry standard scientific data. Too often I see and hear of needless pruning or worse still trees being totally removed as they "might" fail and hit a house. There's no shortage of expert opinions just a shortage of data and options. Be weary of such extreme claims and "free" advice ... and remember, you generally get what you pay for.

What is your tree worth?

Australian moneyAustralia has it's own relatively accepted method for determining the value of a tree. The method is called the "Revised Burnley Method of Tree Valuation". The method equates the value of a tree based on buying the equivalent volume from a nursery but discounts the value based on tree health, form and location. It avoids the subjective components like amenity, historic and cultural values, habitat and environmental values etc

I built an online calculator to make it really easy for you to work out the value of your tree. You will need to know the base value to buy 1m3 of tree from a nursery. There's an example in this post at Treeworld.

Save my dying Poinciana case study

Three advanced poinciana's were planted 2 years ago however they weren't doing well at all. In the 2 pictures above you can see the rapid turn around in 6 months. You can read the full story here how I went about fixing the issues and what caused them, however I do not divuldge what treatment I actually administered as that's a trade secret.

Cabling Bracing Propping - Fall Arrest Systems

There's many different types of systems which have their purposes. Often people are concerned about falling limbs or a tree that might split etc. In some cases you may even be compelled to explore these avenues as the tree is protected and unable to be removed ... it's quite a viable option especially as older trees are less likely to take severe pruning well.

In the video below we install a dynamic system, the trees were mature and not a lot of growth is going to occur. They have been there a long time and have withstood the storms that plagued the region through 2008 and 2009. In fact between the time of the consultation and the work 2 very fierce storms hit the Gold Coast in May and June 2009 and the trees lost a few minor limbs. The concept of a dynamic system is to allow the tree it's natural movement but provide some reassurance in the event of failure. The trees were twin trunked to the ground which is quite common for the species however they showed no signs of failure, no cracks, decay etc ... they are also indigenous to the area.

When trees are allowed their natural movement they grow reaction wood at stress locations, it's their own way of strengthening a weakness. Installing a static system (tensioned steel cables) in this instance would prevent the movement, the tree would then change it's growth pattern, the tree might replace reaction wood at stress points with more apical growth creating other problems. I will stress, every location and tree has to be assessed individually and what you are seeing in this video pertains to the cabling aspect only of 2 trees ... there were other trees that were pruned, one was removed and some had a combination of pruning and cabling.

Aerial Access and Inspections

Often we need to inspect the tree at height, we have a fast and efficient tool for achieving this as shown in the video below. Consider the many applications for this, such as installing nesting boxes.

Trees regulate leaf temperature to 21C

Tree photosynthesis, according to the study, most likely occurs when leaf temperatures are about 21C, with latitude or average growing-season temperature playing little, if any, role. This homeostasis of leaf temperature means that in colder climates leaf temperatures are elevated and in warmer climates tree leaves cool to reach optimal conditions for photosynthesis. Therefore, methods that assume leaf temperature is fixed to ambient air require new consideration. Read more.

Lawn care can kill trees

Weed and feed products contain chemicals that can damage the root systems of trees. In Australia some natives can also be sensative to elements such as P (phosphorous). Many lawn fertilizers also have large amounts of N (nitrogen), whilst that can be a greening fertilizer it can cause rapid growth in trees at the expense of strength and defense. Read more.

Fishbone deforestation increases rainfall

"People often relate tropical deforestation to clear-cuts," Roy said. "Climate models show that clear-cuts, if they happen on a basin-wide scale, will result in decreased rainfall and bring about a drier, more arid landscape. In the case of fishbone patterns, the deforestation is in isolated segments of the landscape, and our models indicate that it results in increased precipitation over these deforested regions." How ants farm aphids

Chemicals on ants' feet tranquilise and subdue colonies of aphids, keeping them close-by as a ready source of food, says new research. The study throws new light on the complex relationship between ants and the colonies of aphids whose sugary secretions the ants eat.Read more.
